Venezuela : Venezuela has been engulfed in widespread protests following the controversial re-election of President Nicolas Maduro. Thousands of Venezuelans have taken to the streets, expressing their anger and disbelief over the election results, which the opposition claims were rigged. The disputed election has drawn global condemnation, with many international observers questioning the legitimacy of the process.
The National Electoral Council (CNE) declared Maduro the winner with 51.2% of the votes, compared to 44.2% for opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia. However, opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who was barred from running and replaced by Gonzalez Urrutia, asserted that the records showed the true winner was the opposition candidate. Machado’s claims have been supported by widespread skepticism and calls for transparency from the United Nations, the United States, the European Union, and several Latin American countries.

In the wake of the announcement, thousands of protesters flooded the streets of Caracas, chanting slogans such as “Freedom, freedom!” and “This government is going to fall!” Security forces responded with tear gas and rubber bullets, leading to violent clashes. Reports indicate that some protesters retaliated by throwing rocks and Molotov cocktails, resulting in at least one fatality. The unrest also saw the destruction of statues of the late Hugo Chavez, Maduro’s predecessor and a socialist icon, as symbols of resistance.
Maduro has dismissed the international criticism and accusations of fraud, accusing foreign powers, particularly the United States, of instigating a coup attempt. He labeled the protests as “fascist and counter-revolutionary” efforts to undermine his government. Attorney General Tarek William Saab accused Machado of involvement in an alleged “cyberattack” aimed at altering the election results.
had previously led to a temporary easing of U.S. sanctions imposed after Maduro’s widely disputed 2018 re-election. However, the recent events have cast doubt on the future of this agreement, with sanctions likely to be reinstated due to the perceived lack of democratic transparency.
