USA vs South Sudan : Team USA secured a decisive 103-86 victory over South Sudan on Wednesday, advancing to 2-0 in group play at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The win came just days after the Americans narrowly escaped with a one-point win against the same opponent in an exhibition game. This time, however, the U.S. controlled the game from start to finish, solidifying their place in next week’s quarterfinals.
The U.S. took the lead late in the first quarter and never looked back, maintaining control for the rest of the night. Bam Adebayo was the standout performer, coming off the bench to score 18 points on 8-for-10 shooting, including two three-pointers. Adebayo also contributed seven rebounds and two blocks, showcasing his all-around game. Five other U.S. players scored in double digits, demonstrating the team’s depth and versatility.
The game featured a different lineup compared to the U.S. opener against Serbia. Coach Steve Kerr started Anthony Davis at center instead of Joel Embiid, who didn’t see any playing time, and Jayson Tatum replaced Jrue Holiday in the starting lineup. Holiday joined Adebayo, Kevin Durant, Derrick White, and Anthony Edwards in a powerful bench unit that accounted for 66 of the team’s points, far outpacing South Sudan’s bench, which managed just 14 points.

Tyrese Haliburton also made his Olympic debut, bringing the total to 11 U.S. players who saw action in the game. The depth and talent of Team USA continue to pose a challenge for the coaching staff as they manage rotations, but it has been a key factor in their success so far. The Americans’ bench was particularly devastating, leading two critical runs that essentially sealed the win.
As Team USA marches toward a potential fifth consecutive gold medal, their depth remains their greatest strength. The victory over South Sudan not only secured their spot in the quarterfinals but also underscored the depth and dominance of the American roster.
