In a tragic incident, professional skydiving instructor Devrey LaRiccia Chase, 28, lost her life in a tandem skydiving accident in Southern California’s Inland Empire. According to her husband, Freddy Chase, who is also a skydiver with a significant social media following, the duo was descending under a deployed parachute when they encountered two “dust devils.” These small, rotating columns of air, resembling mini-tornadoes, can pick up dust and debris, posing a danger to skydivers. While Devrey successfully avoided the first dust devil, she was unable to evade the second one, which caught her parachute and sent it into a downward spiral from about 25 to 30 feet above the ground. The pair crash-landed, and despite being rushed to a local hospital, Devrey succumbed to her injuries. The student suffered serious injuries but survived.
Freddy Chase expressed his grief and shared details of the incident on social media, thanking supporters for their love and condolences. He described his wife as passionate about skydiving and a key figure in his life and work, often serving as the main videographer for his videos. Freddy paid a heartfelt tribute to Devrey, calling her “perfect” and an “angel” who was “too perfect for this world.” skydiving accident
The skydiving community and fans of the couple have been deeply affected by the news. Dust devils, while generally considered harmless, can pose significant risks to skydivers, especially when they are invisible over grassy areas. This incident serves as a somber reminder of the potential dangers involved in the sport.
