Nalin Prabhat Appointed as Special Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police

Nalin Prabhat, a distinguished Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, has been appointed as the Special Director General (SDG) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) announced his transfer from the National Security Guard (NSG) to the AGMUT cadre on August 15, 2024. Prabhat is set to take over as the Director General of Police (DGP) for Jammu and Kashmir once the current DGP, RR Swain, retires on September 30, 2024.

Born on March 14, 1968, in Thungri village, Manali, Himachal Pradesh, Prabhat is a 1992-batch IPS officer of the Andhra Pradesh cadre. He holds a BA (Honours) and an MA from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi. Prabhat has built a formidable reputation in law enforcement, particularly in counter-insurgency operations. His tenure as the leader of the Greyhounds, an elite anti-Naxal unit in Andhra Pradesh, is widely regarded as a significant achievement. Nalin Prabhat

Before his recent role as Director General of the NSG, Prabhat served in various capacities, including as Special Director General (SDG) and Additional Director General (ADG) of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Jammu and Kashmir. He has also held the position of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) for the Kashmir and South Kashmir sectors. Throughout his career, Prabhat has been recognized for his contributions to public safety, earning three Police Gallantry Medals and the Parakram Padak.

Prabhat’s appointment comes at a time of heightened tensions in Jammu and Kashmir, with a recent surge in terrorist activities. The region has witnessed over 20 soldier fatalities and numerous civilian casualties this year, including violent encounters in Kathua, Doda, and Udhampur. As he steps into his new role, Prabhat’s extensive experience in counter-insurgency and strategic law enforcement is expected to play a crucial role in addressing these challenges.

Prabhat’s tenure as Director General of the NSG has been cut short to facilitate his transfer to the AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory) cadre, where he will serve for a period of three years or until further orders. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet sanctioned this inter-cadre deputation, recognizing the critical need for experienced leadership in Jammu and Kashmir.

As Nalin Prabhat prepares to assume leadership of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, his strategic approach to law enforcement will be closely watched. His appointment marks a significant shift in the region’s security dynamics, with expectations that he will bring stability and a renewed focus on counter-terrorism efforts in one of India’s most volatile regions.

Prabhat’s experience, coupled with his commitment to public service, positions him as a pivotal figure in the ongoing efforts to maintain peace and security in Jammu and Kashmir.
