As Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro emerges as a potential vice-presidential running mate for Kamala Harris, his former aide Mike Vereb faces new scrutiny over past allegations of misconduct. In 2018, Vereb allegedly threatened a woman during a phone call, leaving her “weeping and in shock.” The woman, who requested anonymity, claims that Vereb invoked Shapiro’s name during the conversation, saying, “by the time he and Josh were done with me, I would be worse than nothing.” She described the call as aggressive and unsettling, particularly because of how freely Vereb referenced his connections to powerful individuals.
This incident, which had not been reported until now, adds to a series of controversies surrounding Vereb. In 2023, the Shapiro administration settled a separate sexual harassment complaint against Vereb for nearly $300,000. Vereb resigned from his position shortly after the settlement.

The timing of these revelations is significant as Shapiro is reportedly one of four frontrunners to join Harris on the Democratic ticket for the 2024 presidential election. Shapiro, who is Jewish, has also become the target of a campaign opposing his potential nomination, partly due to his pro-Israel stance. The campaign, dubbed “No Genocide Josh,” has garnered attention from left-wing publications and social media.
Supporters of Shapiro argue that he is being unfairly singled out because of his Jewish identity, pointing out that other VP contenders, including Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, and Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly, also have pro-Israel records but have not faced similar opposition.
Harris is expected to announce her vice-presidential pick by Tuesday, with Philadelphia, Shapiro’s home state, being the likely venue for the announcement.
