Jacob Hoggard Former Hedley Frontman Begins Prison Sentence After Sexual Assault Appeal Dismissed

Jacob Hoggard, the former frontman of the Canadian band Hedley, is now behind bars after Ontario’s top court dismissed his appeal against a sexual assault conviction. Hoggard’s legal team confirmed that he surrendered into custody before the court delivered its ruling on Friday.

In a statement, Hoggard’s lawyers expressed their continued belief that his trial was unfair but acknowledged the court’s decision. They indicated that they would be reviewing the judgment to determine their next legal steps.

The Ontario Court of Appeal unanimously upheld Hoggard’s conviction, despite acknowledging that the trial should not have included the testimony of a psychologist who provided expert evidence on the neurobiology of trauma. The court’s decision to uphold the conviction means that Hoggard will now serve the five-year sentence he received in June 2022 after being found guilty of sexual assault causing bodily harm against an Ottawa woman.

Hoggard, who gained fame as the lead singer of Hedley, was released on bail shortly after his conviction in 2022, pending the outcome of his appeal. With the dismissal of the appeal, Hoggard has begun serving his prison sentence, marking a significant chapter in the high-profile case.
