Tehran, Iran : In a significant development amidst the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict, Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of Hamas, has been assassinated in Tehran. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed the incident, stating that Haniyeh and one of his bodyguards were killed in an airstrike on Wednesday morning.
According to a statement released by Hamas, the group accused Israel of carrying out the “treacherous Zionist raid” on Haniyeh’s residence. The assassination occurred shortly after Haniyeh attended the inauguration of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and met with Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Haniyeh had been living in exile in Qatar since 2019 and was in Tehran for official engagements. Ismail Haniyeh

The IRGC’s statement revealed that an “airborne guided projectile” struck the building housing military veterans in northern Tehran around 2:00 am local time. The attack left Haniyeh and his bodyguard dead. The IRGC mentioned that an investigation is ongoing to determine the full details of the operation.
The assassination of Haniyeh, a prominent figure in the Palestinian political landscape, has raised concerns about escalating violence in the region. While Israel has not officially commented on the airstrike, Israeli media reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office had instructed cabinet ministers to refrain from public comments. However, far-right Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu celebrated the assassination on social media, stating, “The killing makes the world a little better.” Ismail Haniyeh
The attack comes amid heightened tensions between Israel and Iran, following Israel’s recent targeting of a senior Hezbollah commander in Beirut. The killing of Haniyeh is viewed as a major escalation and is likely to have significant repercussions. Ismail Haniyeh
The assassination has drawn international attention, with concerns about further escalation in the Middle East. Al Jazeera’s correspondent Hani Mahmoud noted that Haniyeh was seen as a moderate leader and a key figure in negotiations for a potential ceasefire. His death is expected to impact the dynamics of the ongoing conflict, especially as Hamas and Israel continue to engage in hostilities.
The incident also affected global markets, with oil prices surging and gold prices rising due to the heightened geopolitical tensions. The U.S. administration, led by President Joe Biden, has been urging both sides to agree to a ceasefire and release hostages, amid the backdrop of the ongoing conflict sparked by Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel, which killed 1,200 people and captured 250 hostages.
