In a stunning revelation at San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige announced the return of Robert Downey Jr. to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This time, however, the beloved actor will not reprise his iconic role as Iron Man, but instead take on the mantle of one of Marvel’s most notorious villains, Doctor Doom.
Tony Stark, Downey’s superhero alter ego, heroically died in 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame” after a decade-long journey across 10 films. Fans believed that this was the definitive end of Downey’s Marvel career. However, the actor shocked everyone when he appeared on stage at Comic-Con, dramatically tearing off a mask to reveal his new role, to roaring cheers from the audience.
“New mask, same task,” Downey posted about his unexpected return.

Doctor Doom, or Victor Von Doom, is set to appear in the upcoming films “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.” The casting has left many fans puzzled, with online speculation rife about how Downey’s role will fit into the Marvel storyline. Some fans theorize that Downey will portray a variant of Doctor Doom who is an evil multiverse version of Tony Stark. Others believe Downey will play the character with no direct ties to Iron Man. Given that Doctor Doom typically wears a face mask, it is expected that Downey’s involvement will primarily be voice work.
